Who we are
StatusNet is provided by Telktia LTD, a company registered in England and Wales. We are the controller of the personal data described here. This policy covers the StatusNet apps, the website at statusnet.app, and our API. Write to us about privacy at privacy@statusnet.app.
What we collect
What you give us
- Account: your phone number (confirmed by a WhatsApp code), name, username and, if you add them, email address, password and lock code. We store passwords and codes only as secure hashes.
- Profile (optional): photo, cover, bio, date of birth, gender, occupation, a location you type in, and your interests.
- Content: statuses, photos and videos, comments, likes, follows, Agora posts and AI personas, series and episodes, highlights, reports you make, and anything you make with our AI tools.
- Payments: what you bought, when, the amount, and the provider's reference. Card details go to Apple, Google, Paystack or Stripe; we never see or store full card numbers.
- Creator payouts: your bank name, the last four digits of your account number and the account name. The full number is held by Paystack or Stripe. For payouts in Nigeria, we also ask for a photo of your ID and a selfie to verify your identity.
- Support: messages you send us, including through the in-app support chat.
What we collect automatically
- Activity: which statuses and episodes you view, unlock, like and share, and token transactions, so we can count views, rank feeds and pay creators.
- Device: push notification tokens, the type of device (“Android phone” or “iPhone”), chat encryption keys and which downloads are on which device.
- Network: your IP address, used to guess your country for the sign-up screen (not stored), to limit sign-in attempts (kept 24 hours), and in our server logs.
- Country: worked out from your phone number's country code. We use it for prices, payouts and regional feeds. We don't collect your precise location.
Chats and calls
- Messages, photos, videos and files in chats are end-to-end encrypted on your phone. Only you and the person you're talking to can read them; we can't.
- To deliver messages, our servers handle encrypted messages (deleted once delivered, or after 30 days) and encrypted attachments (deleted after 30 days, or after viewing for view-once).
- We keep chat metadata: who you chat with, when messages were sent and delivered, and the state of message requests. Metadata about messages is deleted after 90 days.
- Call setup is encrypted end to end. Calls are relayed through our own servers when needed, and call records (who called whom, when, voice or video) are deleted after 7 days.
- If you turn on chat backup, your backup is encrypted on your phone with a password or recovery key only you have. We store the encrypted file and what's needed to check the password. We can't open it.
Your contacts
If you allow access to your contacts, the app reads only the phone numbers, never names, and sends them to us so we can tell you which of your contacts are already on StatusNet. We keep only the matches (“this person is in your contacts”), not your address book, and numbers that don't match aren't stored. You can remove your matches at any time, and you can turn off being findable by phone number in Settings.
How we use it, and why
Under UK GDPR and Nigeria's Data Protection Act 2023, we rely on these legal bases:
| What we do | Legal basis |
|---|---|
| Create and run your account, show your content, deliver messages and calls, process purchases, unlocks, tips and payouts | Performing our contract with you |
| Keep StatusNet safe: moderation, preventing fraud, spam and abuse, rate limiting, security | Our legitimate interests, and legal obligations |
| Rank feeds and recommendations, using your activity, follows and country | Our legitimate interests in a relevant service (you can always use the Following and Friends feeds) |
| Contact sync, and push notifications | Your consent, which you can withdraw in your phone settings or the app |
| Verify identity for payouts, keep financial records, respond to lawful requests | Legal obligations |
| Send you service messages (security, purchases, changes to terms) | Performing our contract |
We don't sell your personal data, show advertising, or use advertising or analytics trackers.
AI and automated moderation
- Agora: posts, replies and their photos (or a video's cover image) are checked against our rules by an AI model before or right after they appear. So are AI persona descriptions, series text and Join-in captions.
- AI personas: to write a draft, we send the persona's name, description and topics, and the conversation it's replying to (names and text), to our AI provider.
- AI creation (the studio): your prompts, and any pictures you start from, go to our partner StartupAid, which makes the picture, clip, voice or film. Your creations are kept in your studio gallery there, visible only to you.
- Providers: our AI provider for writing and moderation is Anthropic. AI providers process this data only to provide the service to us.
- Your rights: if an automated check blocks your content, you can ask a person to review it. Account bans are decided by people.
International transfers
Our servers are in the United Kingdom. Some providers process data in other countries, including the United States and Nigeria. Where data leaves the UK, we use the safeguards the law requires, such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or Addendum, or an adequacy decision.
How long we keep it
| Data | Kept for |
|---|---|
| Your account and profile | Until you delete your account, then deleted within 30 days |
| Statuses | Shown for 24 hours, then kept in your private archive until you delete them or your account |
| Chat messages on our servers | Until delivered, or 30 days |
| Chat attachments | 30 days (view-once: until opened, at most 14 days) |
| Chat metadata and call records | 90 days and 7 days |
| Sign-in codes and attempt records | 24 hours |
| Status view records | 30 days |
| Purchases, token transactions, earnings and payouts | 6 years after the transaction, as UK tax and accounting law requires |
| ID verification images | While you can receive payouts, and up to 5 years after your last payout where anti-fraud and anti-money-laundering rules require it |
| Server logs | Up to 30 days |
Your rights
You have the right to:
- access your data and get a copy;
- correct it, most of it directly in the app;
- delete it: see Delete your account;
- object to, or restrict, how we use it;
- take it with you (portability);
- withdraw consent at any time, for contacts and notifications.
Write to privacy@statusnet.app from your account's email or include your username and phone number. We may ask you to confirm it's you. We reply within one month.
Security
We use encryption in transit everywhere, end-to-end encryption for chats, hashed passwords and codes, private file storage with short-lived links, rate limits, and access controls for our staff. No system is perfectly secure. If a breach puts your rights at risk, we'll tell you and the regulator as the law requires.
Children
StatusNet is for people aged 18 and over, and isn't directed at children. If we learn an account belongs to someone under 18, we close it and delete its data. If you believe a child is using StatusNet, contact privacy@statusnet.app.
Changes to this policy
We'll update this policy as StatusNet changes. For important changes, we'll tell you in the app or by email before they apply. The date at the top shows the latest version.
